On Thursday March 1st Saddlebrook Farm was hit by an F2 (almost F3) tornado, that left not one single fenceline intact, destroyed stalls, outbuildings, spread debris throughout the farm, destroyed jumps, tack buildings, etc. In short, nearly the only things left standing were some pieces of trees, the main house, and all the horses. Luckily horses and humans survived with just scrapes and scratches and a few injuries that required stitches. HUGE thanks go out to Epp Wilson and the Belle Meade Hunt that took us in and sheltered our nearly 20 horses in the middle of the night, showing up with trailers and halters and help to aid the soaking wet people who had already arrived at the farm to round up the horses and keep them safely off the road and check for injuries. BIG thanks to Dr. Wester for coming out in the middle of the night to treat and stitch the walking wounded and shocked horses. Over the next 3 days the Saddlebrook family pulled together to put in 12 hour days clearing debris, mending fencelines, drying blankets, organizing tack and all related medicines, feed, etc. All the hard work paid off, and almost ALL the fenceline was restored, tons of debris was cleared and removed, and pastures were checked for dangerous articles that might further injure the horses. On Sunday evening, we were able to bring home all but the more severely injured horses, the ones still requiring stall rest and veterinary care! Those horses were SO excited to be home they just ran and ran for over 30 minutes straight! Thanks to all who showed up to lend a hand, drop off hay, food, words of comfort/support--we appreciate each and every one of you! |
